Could These Have Saved X-MEN: THE LAST STAND? Concept Art and Storyboards by Adrien Van Viersen

See early scenes from X-Men: TheLast Stand that could have saved the film.

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) was a box-office success, but not everyone loved it. Justin Chang of Variety said the film is "a wham-bam sequel noticeably lacking in the pop gravitas, moody atmospherics and emotional weight that made the first two Marvel comicbook adaptations so rousingly successful."  That means it wasn't as good as the first two, which I agree with.

Concept art by Adrien Van Viersen show scenes from early versions of script that could have been awesome. In one scene, from an early version of the script by writers Dan Harris, Michael Dougherty and John Ottman, Jean Grey destroys San Fransisco and is overwhelmed by her powers. To save everyone, she kills herself and her "spirit" survives and becomes a "godlike cosmic" creature, which Dougherty compared to the "star child" in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Storyboards show a scene from an early draft of the script where Kitty Pride (Ellen Page) visits the President in his limo and the storyboard for the classic scene where she saves Jimmy/"Leech" (Cameron Bright) from the Juggernaut (Vinny Jones).

Plus, Colossus kicks the Juggernaut in the head.

Adrien Van Viersen is a professional concept and storyboard artist who's worked on big-budget projects like The Incredible Hulk, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and X-Men 2.

Check them out after the jump and click to embiggen (enlarge).

Wouldn't that have been awesome?! Now look at storyboards for the scene that did make it in.

Watch the Juggernaut scene.

See What Deadpool Almost Looked Like in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE by Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr.

Studio ADI released a video showing a bunch of concept art images of what Wade "Deadpool" Williams (Ryan Reynolds) could have looked like in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009). Some are weird, and some are bizarre, but all are brilliant.

Check out the rest of the images after the jump and click to enlarge.
They describe the video this way:
"Here, in quick succession, are 82 variations on Deadpool. It was our job to satisfy the many creative voices on the show, from director Gavin Hood to the Producers and Studio, so we generated a huge selection of artwork from complete direction changes to subtle variations like tweaks to eye color. This is why having a design phase at the start of preproduction is so valuable. We'll never satisfy everyone with a design, but an exploratory like this lets us consider the options."

The designs are by special makeup effects designers and Studio ADI founders Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr.

Here are some stills from the video and what the finished make-up looked like.

Official Synopsis:
Heroic Hugh Jackman breathes the fire into Wolverine -- with a vengeance! This pulse-pounding action thriller sinks razor-sharp adamantium claws into the mysterious origins of Logan/Wolverine: his epically violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed/Sabretooth (Liev Schreiber), and the ominous Weapon X program that unleashes his primal fury.

Unseen FANTASTIC FOUR and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND Concept Art by Carlos Haunte

Two movies that are squarely in the mid-range of comic book movies are Fantastic Four (2006) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). They weren't bad, but they weren't in the range of The Dark Knight either.

For example, making Doctor Doom's metal face organic was a good idea, but it never went very far. But what if they had gone all the way with it? Juggernaut was interesting in X-Men 3, but he didn't look much like the comic. What if they had gone father? Professional concept artist Carlos Haunte has some designs on his site that shows what could have been.

Check out the images after the jump and click to enlarge.

First, here are some concepts from Fantastic Four of Doctor Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon) along with the Ben Grimm / The Thing (Michael Chiklis).

Now, here are some illustrations from X-Men: The Last Stand of Beast/Hank McCoy (Kelsey Grammar) and Cain Marko / Juggernaut (Vinnie Jones).
