Check out storyboards of the Spider-Man 2 Subway train attack by Chris Buchinsky!

The most exciting scene in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies was the Doctor Octopus' attack on a subway train in Spider-Man 2 (2004). All those people flying around and Doc's arms swinging on the train are the best of the films. One of the storyboard artists that worked on Spider-Man 2 was Chris Buchinsky and he kindly shared these storyboards with me.

Buchinsky is a professional storyboard artist who's worked on films such as Green Lantern (2011) Seabiscuit (2003) and Lost (2010).

Venom is the most popular Spider-Man villain of all-time. Many were disappointed with his portrayal in Spider-Man 3 mainly for the development of the character, but he also lacked the look of the classic villain.

Constantine Sekeris shared some designs on his blog that show a very different, and more faithful version, of the character that was rejected.

Sweet concept art for The Amazing Spider-Man by Fabian Lacey.

This big budget action picture grossed $262,030,663 at the box office and ushered in a whole new trilogy for Spider-Man.

One of the many artists working on the film was Fabian Lacey who also worked on The Avengers (2012), Star Trek (2009) and Green Lantern(2011).

Unseen Lizard concept art from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 (2004) have hit the web thanks to professional concept artist Constantine Sekeris (Spider-Man 3, Thor, Grimm). The movie was an unqualified success, grossing over $783 million worldwide and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. But, what if the movie had been slightly different?

The art was first reported by NailBiter111 on Comic Book Movie. Here's what he said about them:
"Some of you may be shocked to learn that director Sam Raimi was initially planning to have Dr. Curt Connors (Dylan Baker) turn into The Lizard for Spider-Man 2. He, along with Dock Ock, Black and Harry (James Franco) as the new Green Goblin, were all to be featured in the sequel, but screenwriter Michael Chabon suggested narrowing the field down to just Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina).

"So, as I was scouring through Constantine Sekeris' website today I came across concept art of a reptilian figure. I asked the artist if it was for The Amazing Spider-Man. He then emailed me back explaining that it was actually created a long time ago for Spider-Man 2 when the choice of villain(s) was still up in the air."

The biggest problem with Spider-Man 3 was the number of villains. If Spider-Man 2 had four villains it would have been insane. I contacted Constantine and asked him a few questions about the pieces to get more information.

Q: Thanks for this quick interview Constantine. What description did you get from Sam Raimi?
Actually, the lizard designs were done when I was working at Steve Johnson's Edge FX years ago. Steve and I were in a meeting for another Marvel movie and, by chance, Marvel brought up the lizard as one of the options for the Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2. This was long before the movie was in production and, to get Marvel excited, I did those designs in hopes of working on the film.

Back when I worked at Edge FX, we were very aggressive in getting projects and so Steve would let me loose and start coming up with designs to get clients excited and to set meetings up for possibly working on the film and getting the work. We never met up with Sam Raimi to discuss the Lizard character. By the time the movie was in production Dr. Octopus was already decided as the villain.

Q: What was your inspiration for the designs?
The inspiration came from the comics and I did what I thought Marvel would like to see in their movie. Back then practical fx where still used more than today, and so I was designing the lizard as a guy in a suit with an animatronic mouth and another design more in the digital world.

One of the most chilling scenes in Spider-Man 2 (2004) was when the unwitting doctor's tried to remove Doctor Octopus' arms. It was actually the scene thatSam Raimi filmed first to set the tone for the movie.

It called into question the level of violence in the film. "Yeah, in the surgery room," Raimi told Sci-Fi Wire. "You know, I was wondering if that was going to be too violent. Wow, I hope it's not too violent. ... Maybe it is.

"I didn't really make a conscious choice to make it more violent, although I don't disagree with you. I think what happened was I was trying to establish in the minds of the audience that ... these tentacles [and] this man, Dr. Octavius, had become this monster, and as this monster, he had killed, or these tentacles had killed. And so he was going to be on the lam and hunted. ... But perhaps it's more violent than it needed to be. I didn't mean to make it more violent, I just wanted to show that he was a character to be frightened of, you know?"

For the movie Spider-Man (2002) there were a lot of designs for the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe). Before it was decided to make a static mask, they experimented with silicone appliances and an animatronic mask.

Here's a video by Studio ADI (Amalgamated Dynamics) of the designs and visual effects tests using concept artist Miles Teves designs.

Here are the concept designs by Miles Teves - who also worked on King Kong (2005), Total Recall (1990), and Real Steel (2010) - of the mask and costume along with his comments from his official site.

"This take on the Green Goblin, and the one after this, was done for the costume designer on the first film. Everyone seemed to like it, yet somehow, in the mix of Hollywood nonsense, we ended up with that horrible, clunky, Kabuki mask in the film that everyone agrees is one of the worst villain costumes in modern cinema."

Designing such an iconic costume for The Amazing Spider-Man was a huge challenge. One of the costume illustrators Felipe Sanchez (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Green Hornet, Speed Racer), shared some exclusive artwork of Spider-Man's costume and Gwen Stacy's (Emma Stone) look.

Here's what he told me about working on the suit.

"I was thrilled to work on style lines, web patterns and color blocks for the suit, gloves, boots and mask, but I have to say: What impressed me the most about working on Spider-man was the 'full circle' journey the ideas for the suit took from the original, vintage character to the end result. The exploration started with a broad scope of possibilities using Organic Life morphed with Advanced Technology, followed by a focus on Active Speed-Sport gear, then refined and developed to a plausible, Peter Parker invention. The concept coverage left no stone unturned for the 'right new look.'

"The payoff: A new suit design emerged with the Classic Formula respected, updated and enhanced. It was a great experience to be able to participate proactively through all the creative stages."
