Update: Corrected the credit for one artist
Get a good look at costume designs for Kirk's spacesuit, the Klingon uniform and aliens that didn't make it into Star Trek Into Darkness.

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) is a global hit selling $181,537,381 in tickets in the U.S. alone. Costume Designer Michael Kaplan brought Constantine Sekeris, Christopher Ross and others in to help concept the designs.

Kaplan told Clothes on Film that designing the first film was about feeling correct to today’s audiences of ‘Trekkies’ and general moviegoers. This time, that had been done so they moved forward with a darker tone and costumes reflect that world.

The design of the volcano suit and space suits were a challenge. "They were all built by Film Illusions, and worked without a snag." Kaplan added, "These were not simple costumes, since ventilation, cooling, audio and lighting systems were necessary. The actors’ comfort and safety were always our second concern.

"Spock's suit is to protect him from the heat of the volcano." Kaplan told the Guardian "I'd never seen a space suit in copper, and I think copper's very beautiful. I went for the look more than the correct reasoning. Copper is probably the worst material to use when you're trying to protect yourself against heat. There needed to be ventilation in the helmet so that it didn't fog up, so that Zachary Quinto wasn't perspiring."

"The helmets address a lot of the features the Klingons have without having to show them." Michael Kaplan said, "You kind of know they're Klingons because they have those foreheads … even when they're wearing their helmets you can tell."

N is for Neville Page
Here's a brief interview with one of my favorite creature designers Neville Page (Avatar, Watchmen, Super 8). He designed helmets for Tron: Legacy, rectum based creatures for Star Trek and the mysterious creature for Cloverfield.

My background, quite frankly, is more Tron than it is creature,” Page says in this Wired.com video interview, conducted during Comic-Con International last month. “The process of invention of a helmet or a creature — it’s the same stuff, it’s just different subject matter, really.”

From those films to Avatar and Watchmen, Page’s portfolio is packed with some of the most memorable imagery to come out of Hollywood in recent years.

In the interview, Page talks about his work on Abrams’ upcoming Super 8, which he likens to sculpting a creature from the raw marble of creativity in the director’s mind, and also spills the beans on his reluctant attempt to get James Cameron to make an appearance in Pirahna 3D.

The film Cloverfield (2009) by J.J. Abrams is one of the most unique monster movies ever made. Even after watching the film I didn't get a good look at the creature, but thanks to the Internet, we get a peek at how concept artist Neville Page (Avatar, Watchmen, Star Trek) designed the creature nicknamed "Clover". What a treat to have worked on this. The only downside was how little time I had available to work on it. Part of the joy in doing this kind of work is the development and exploration. However, there was little time to do any finished sketches and no time for traditional rendering. I saw more finished artwork on the internet done by fans of the film. Oh well, it is a luxury sometimes to have that time while on a production. All that being said, scroll down to see some of the images used to develop the project.

Concept artists get inspiration from many sources including loathsome diseases. When concept artist Page was assigned the task of creating a monstrous snow creature for the 2008 J.J Abrams film, Star Trek, Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) Big Red, a lobster-hued snow-planet scourge that shows up to attack James T. Kirk. "The brief was, it needs the most disgusting mouth," Page says. He considered crabby, finger-like oral appendages, then decided there's nothing ickier than the sight of a prolapsed rectum.
