Incredible IRON MAN 3 Concept Art by Phil Saunders

Check out Iron Man 3 concept art by Phil Saunders!

Iron Man 3 has been out since May, but one of the main concept artists, Phil Saunders, has just shared concept art from the film. They shed some light on a bunch of ideas that never made it into the film including the original idea for the "Extremis" technology, alternate armor designs and the surprising connection this movie has with Game of Thrones.

Phil Saunders is a professional concept artist who's worked on blockbuster movies like The Avengers (2012), Tron Legacy (2010) and Iron Man (2008).

Check out the rest of the images after the jump (click to enlarge).

All comments are from his CGHub page.

Iron Man 3 MkXLII early concept
"We called this one the 'track suit.' Wonder why. The helmet design from this one was eventually incorporated into Ryan Meinerding's final Mk 42." - Phil Saunders

Iron Man 3 War Machine Mk2 Concept
"Another of several designs I did for the updated War Machine. This one was an attempt at referencing military aircraft rather than tanks for the forms to create a more streamlined but still weaponized suit. The helmet and side intakes on this design were eventually incorporated into Ryan Meinerding's final suit." - Phil Saunders

Iron Man 3 Extremis concept
"An early design for the character of 'Savin.' In early versions of the script Extremis was based on Nanotechnology like in the comic book, and would have constructed some sort of internal armor structure to grant the enhanced soldiers super-strength and near-invulnerability. thematically they would have been a reflection of Tony Stark, wearing their "suits" internally rather than externally. Makeup would have subtly suggested that structure by deforming their skin in a mechanical way. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from Game of Thrones was considered early on for the role (at that time called Kruger) so our early sketches reflected his likeness." - Phil Saunders

Iron Man 3 MkXV "Sneaky" stealth suit
"Another unused design from Iron Man 1 that I brushed off and revised for IM3's roster of suits. Again I'd never developed a back view, so I finally got to complete a design I'd always liked." - Phil Saunders

Iron Man 3 MkXL "Shotgun" Hypervelocity suit Flying
"A keyframe to show how the Hypervelocity suit would look locked together in flight mode. I always liked the idea of a suit that would lock together into a streamlined airfoil shape for flight. This one would have been lightly armored and lightweight. The 'face' design was meant to suggest a fighter pilot with oxygen mask and visor. An exercise in seeing how far we could push the iconic Iron Man 'face' and still make it recognizable. In a roster of 42 suits you have to find a way to make them as distinct as possible." - Phil Saunders

Iron Man 3 MkXXXVII "Hammerhead" Deep Dive suit
"An unused design from Iron Man 1 I brushed off and revised for IM3's roster of suits. I'd never developed a back view, so much of the focus went there as well as figuring out how to get some articulation out of the bulky concept. The color was ultimately changed by VFX in the final film." - Phil Saunders

Iron Man 3 concept art by Andy Park, Rodney Fuentabella and Josh Nizzi!

Having made over $400 million domestically and more than $1.2 billion internationally, Disney's Iron Man 3 is close to being 2013's most successful film. A few of the artists that have helped design the film are Andy Park, Rodney Fuentabella and Josh Nizzi. I thought I'd share some of their best work on the film.

IRON MAN 3 Storyboards by Martin L. Mercer

See Martin L. Mercer's storyboards for three Iron Man 3 scenes: Iron Patriot discovering the Afghan sweatshop, Savin escaping by truck, and Rhodey in the situation room.

He is a professional storyboard artist who's worked on Hollywood films like The X-Files (1993), Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2005) and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009). He was brought in to do some last minute re-shoot work in L.A.

Check out the rest of the images after the jump and click to enlarge. Be aware some of the boards have spoilers!

Mercer says his biggest challenge was having a newborn son, and working on Almanac (2014) at the same time. All while driving down 405 to Marvel studios for meetings, and getting the work done quickly. He said he wanted to do his best within the time since "a good friend had passed on the work to me."

His favorite time on the project was meeting director Shane Black and seeing the Marvel headquarters.

Stunning IRON MAN 3 Mandarin Ten Rings Concept Art by Andrea Dopaso

See the stunningly beautiful Mandarin rings from Iron Man 3.

The portrayal of the Mandarin has been controversial enough by changing the character's history from Chinese to actor Ben Kingsley.

Director Shane Black explained, "One of the joys for me has always been seeing how you take a villain from the comic book and realize him in a slightly more realistic way for the movie—render him for movies in a way that’s recognizable, but different. That’s fun. Like the Joker in The Dark Knight is not the Joker from the comic book, but there’s just enough of him that you recognize him and go, 'Wow, what a creative way of interpreting the Joker for motion pictures.' So that was our task here, too. The fans love this character of the Mandarin and we just said, 'Well, what we don’t want is this potentially racist, stereotype of a Fu Manchu villain just waving his fist.'"

The Mandarin was created by Stan Lee and designed by Don Heck, first appearing in Tales of Suspense #50 back in 1964. In the comics he is a scientific genius and a brilliant martial arts fighter. The movie version had none of these traits, but did have his trademark rings.

Unfortunately the rings didn't do anything. In the comics, the Mandarin fashions ten ring from alien spaceship metal and it allows him to do everything from make fire to freeze people. Shane said that "... he’s not from space in this. The rings are rings. They’re showmanship, they’re accoutrements. They’re paraphernalia of warfare that he sort of drapes himself with"

Still, artist Andrea Dopaso put a lot of work into designing them.

Argentinan artist Andrea Dopaso is a professional Hollywood set designer and concept illustrator for films such as Spider-Man (2002), Star Trek into Darkness (2013) and Solaris (2002).

Comic Book Movie's Jay Johnson (Nailbiter111) shared some gorgeous concept art of the Mandarin's rings and Pepper Pott's necklace.

Check out the rest of the images after the jump and click to enlarge.

Here's what she had to say about the art on her site goodart-badart.com:

Mandarin's Ten Rings

"[Director] Shane Black, was a breeze. [Iron Man 3 Prop Master Russell Bobbitt] is the kind of person that makes you forget that you are actually ['working'].  His passion for what he does melts away any difficulty, and he knows how to get things done, literally.

"This time I got the coolest assignment : 'The [Mandarin] Rings', and I got the chance to design them in Zbrush.

"I was [hoping] to send them to grow, but because of the many considerations of proper fitting and weight of the rings, Russell made the wise decision to trust them to a professional jewelry maker."

Pepper's Shrapnel Necklace

"I also got the chance to work in the Necklace that Tony gives as a present to Pepper Potts. The necklace is special because it had been made with the shrapnel that was removed from Tony’s body.
In this case my version of this piece was not the final used in the film."
