Star Wars 3 (Episode III: Revenge of the Sith) had striking visuals. Especially the burning lava planet of Mustafar.


In this Star Wars Blu-Ray video clip Ryan Church explains the designs of Mustafar from "Lava Planet" and we see the fight between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader.

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith is a 2005 American epic space opera film written and directed by George Lucas. It is the sixth and final film released in the Star Wars saga and the third in terms of the series' internal chronology.

The film takes place three years after the onset of the Clone Wars. The Jedi Knights are spread out across the galaxy leading a massive clone army in the war against the Separatists. The Jedi Council dispatches Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) to eliminate the evil General Grievous, leader of the Separatist Army. Meanwhile, Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) separated from Kenobi, his former master, grows close to Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), the Chancellor of the Galactic Republic and, unbeknownst to the public, a Sith Lord. Their deepening friendship proves dangerous for the Jedi Order, The Republic, and Anakin himself who inevitably succumbs to the Dark Side of the Force and becomes Darth Vader, changing the fate of the galaxy forever.

This weekend I bought the Star Trek (2009) Blu-Ray (Can you believe it was five bucks at Walmart?!) and enjoyed the behind-the-scenes concept art section featuring art by Ryan Chuch and others.

Entertainment Weekly had an article that said Abrams wanted to take the original TV-series Enterprise and the movie-franchise Enterprise and fuse them together.

He said, "If you’re going to do Star Trek, there are many things you cannot change. The Enterprise is a visual touchstone for so many people. So if you’re going to do the Enterprise, it better look like the Enterprise, because otherwise, what are you doing?"

 

Back in 2008 there was alot of criticism of the designs from the early images released. Church responded on TrekMovie.com 

"I’m not going to get involved in the mud slinging, here, but needed to assure you guys and gals: we’ve built you a fine ship." Church said, "To clarify: there’s a slight optical illusion occurring here, consequence of the 'camera angle.'

"For Rick and others who worry the nacelles don’t have a clear line of sight over the disc — they, in fact, do. We were hardly working in a vacuum. I raided ILM reference photos like a madman. We were deferential to 'inviolates' of Star Trek design vocabulary. Additionally, the profile here isn’t 100% representative, because, as you’ve noticed, the Bussards are dimmed. The true profile of the nacelles may or may not be revealed here, and that’s all I’ll say."

The 2005 Steven Spielberg remake of the classic War Of The Worlds was impressive, but the man tasked with designing the classic alien tripods was Ryan Church.

He posted some sample concept art on his website and I'm sharing a few of my favorites.

There were many, many attempts to bring the "John Carter of Mars" series to screen. We've already seen concept art for the Disney movie John Carter coming out this year. Plus, we've seen concept art from the film when Robert Rodriguez was supposed to direct.

Looking Glass Films has a video by Kerry Conrad, the creator of the visually stunning Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. It was found by the massive John Carter fan site Barsoomia.com. The production predates the 2012 version by several years.

The promo reel is gorgeous and expertly put together. The concept art really captures the feel of a moving and emotional action film while the voice-overs help to explain the images without being obvious.

Update: A YouTube commenter identified the artists as Ian McCaig and Ryan Church. I see one more style in there, but don't know who.
Some (unfortunately low-resolution) screencaps are below. I have no idea who the concept artist is, but the colors and style is exceptionally well-done. There are shades of Avatar with the six-legged horses and other designs, but Cameron stole the ideas from John Carter first. Check it out after the jump...

The video also has test reels including CGI battle scenes and an awesome fight between Carter and a six-armed Barsoomian.



With all the budget trouble their having with the new film we have to wonder what the budget of this film would have been.
