'THE AVENGERS' Thanos Concept Art

One of the biggest reveals in The Avengers (2012) was the appearance of Thanos "The Mad Titan." It sent fans running to the Internet to figure out who he was and why he was there. Thanos was the shadowy figure who gave Loki the alien army he used to try and conquer Earth. His appearnace was only 5 seconds long and it was one of those "blink you missed it" moments in films.

Which is why it's so exciting that the Avengers app "Second Screen" unlocked concept art of Thanos. I bought the Avengers Blu-Ray this week and am still going through it, but someone else did and shared the following concept art after the jump.

I don't know who all the artists are, but I recognize Charles "Charlie" Wen and Andy Park's signature on two of them.

'IRON MAN 3' Iron Patriot Concept Art

Set pictures appeared to show Iron Patriot on the Iron Man 3 (2013) set. ScreenRant pointed out it's just James Rhodes' (Don Cheadle) War Machine armor in patriotic colors.

At long last we get a good look at Tony Stark's (Robert Downey Jr.) Mark XLVII Iron Man armor and War Machine's armor in new concept art. Click on the images to enlarge.

No artist is listed, but I'm guessing it's Bosnian-British comic book artist and conceptual designer Adi Granov (Iron Man, Iron Man 2). Here's a piece he did of Iron Man and it's his style.

Here the original leaked set picture of the armor and click here to see the last piece of Iron Man concept art which just showed his boots and gloves.

'Star Trek: First Contact' Storyboard to Film Comparison

Here's a film to storyboard comparison from the movie Star Trek: First Contact. Roger Ebert considers it one of the best Star Trek films and it made $146 million worldwide. First Contact was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Makeup and won three Saturn Awards.

One of my favorite scenes is when Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart), Data (Brent Spiner) and Worf (Michael Dorn) go onto the saucer section of the Enterprise to stop the Borg invasion.

The storyboard The storyboard artist is John Mann (Iron Man 2, Superman Returns, xXx) [I contacted John Mann and, while he did work on the film, this storyboard isn't his] has a great sense of tension. This video originally appeared on StarTrek.com.

Wikipedia Synopsis:
Star Trek: First Contact is a 1996 American science fiction film released by Paramount Pictures. It is the eighth feature film in the Star Trek science fiction franchise and the first film to feature no cast members from the original Star Trek television series of the 1960s. The primary cast for First Contact is from the Star Trek: The Next Generation television series, to which the film's producers added Alice Krige, Neal McDonough, James Cromwell and Alfre Woodard. In the film's plot, the crew of the USS Enterprise-E travel from the 24th to 21st century to save their future after the cybernetic Borg conquered Earth by changing the timeline.

DOCTOR WHO 'Dinosaurs on a Spaceship' Storyboards

I've featured storyboards from Doctor Who before and they have always been excellent. These are no exception.

I'm not sure who the artist is since IMDb didn't list the artist for this season. But Shaun Williams, Rod Knipping, Matthew Savage, Lewis Peake and James Iles have done storyboard work in the past.
The boards are from scenes 7, 8 and 12.

Check them out after the jump and make sure you click to enlarge.

'Batman Returns' Penguin Concept Art by Mark 'Crash' McCreery

The Penguin from Batman Returns (1992) was a visual spectacle. Taking a nod from Tim Burton's love of German Expressionism he captured the lecherous sneer of Dr Caligari. The artist that helped design and create him is Key SWS concept artist Mark 'Crash' McCreery (Jurassic Park, Predator
Galaxy Quest) along with Stan Winston.

Stan Winston shared his work and McCreery's concept art on Danny Devito's Penguin in the book The Winston Effect: The Art & History of Stan Winston Studio and excerpts have been posted to Stan Winston School.

"The initial concept was just a pointy nose," Winston said, "but I wasn’t really happy with that. So I got my hands back in the clay, which I love, and started playing with the look myself. Years ago, for The Wiz, I had created crow characters with enormous beak faces, which involved whole forehead and brow appliances. I’d always loved that design; and, although crows had nothing to do with penguins, I felt that I could use a similar concept for the Penguin. That turned out to be the look that was selected."

Check out his drawings for Batman Begins after the jump. While they can do amazing things with digital art these days, McCreery's luminous pencil work is astounding. There's also one drawing for Batman Begins by make-up artist Shane Mahan.

Wikipedia Synopsis:
Batman Returns is a 1992 American superhero film directed by Tim Burton. Based on the DC Comics character Batman, it is a sequel to 1989's Batman. Michael Keaton reprises the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman, Pat Hingle returns as Commissioner Gordon, and Michael Gough returns as Wayne's butler Alfred Pennyworth. The film introduces the characters of Max Shreck (Christopher Walken), a megalomaniac business tycoon who teams up with the deformed and deranged Penguin (Danny DeVito) to take over Gotham City, as well as the character of Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), a wronged secretary named Selina Kyle with mixed motives regarding the Dark Knight.

I can't find Mark 'Crash' McCreery's official site (if you know add it in the comments), but you can learn more about his work at IMDb.

'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' Concept Art By Nathan Schroeder

With the release of the Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures [Blu-ray] I thought it would be fun to look at some concept art from one of the films: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008). While it's not my favorite of the series, the scenes of the Mayan ruins are breath-taking.

Nathan Schroeder (The Avengers, Star Trek, X-Men) helped design for the film and here's what he said about the design on his site.
"I was very excited to be able to work on the fourth, and perhaps final installment of this legendary series of films. My biggest contribution to this film was the creation of a series of paintings and relief carvings that explain the origins of the crystal skull."

Wikipedia Synopsis:
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a 2008 American adventure science fiction film. It is the fourth and final film in the Indiana Jones franchise, created by George Lucas and directed by Steven Spielberg. Released nineteen years after the previous film, the film acknowledges its star Harrison Ford's age by being set in 1957. It pays tribute to the science fiction B-movies of the era, pitting Indiana Jones against Soviet agents—led by Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett)—for a psychic alien crystal skull. Indiana is aided by his former lover Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) and son Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf). Ray Winstone, John Hurt and Jim Broadbent are also part of the supporting cast.
